Canadian Open

Monday, July 19 – Sunday, July 25 By Briony Harper We flew from Reno to San Francisco on Monday morning then onto Toronto, Canada, for the Canadian Open. Our flight arrived at about 9 pm Monday when we discovered our pre-booked courtesy car was not available and our pre-booked hotel room was under the name “Lyle Jarrod”, which caused great confusion at the front desk. It was not a good end to a very long day of travel. Tuesday and Wednesday were practice days for Jarrod, and gave him an opportunity to get used to the pace of the greens. The tournament began on Thursday, with an 8.55 am tee time. There was a rain delay on Friday morning that changed all the afternoon tee times, so Jarrod didn't start until almost 4 pm. Luckily, due to the long days in Canada, all of the players were able to finish round two on Friday as planned. Jarrod shot 69 and 72 to miss the cut by two shots. His putting let him down again and he missed several birdie opportunities. Perhaps the travel is taking its toll – it was our eighth week on the road and his body is exhausted after so much golf. Our real ``fun'' began at the end of his round on Friday night. Jarrod was sixth alternate for the PGA event next week as of Friday morning, so we chose to travel to Omaha instead for the Nationwide event. I had spent some time cancelling and changing flights and accommodation to reflect Jarrod's decision, but, by 9 pm Friday, enough players had withdrawn from the PGA event and Jarrod was in the field. This meant our plans had to change again. Our new travel plans included a two-hour drive from Toronto to Buffalo on Saturday afternoon, which meant we crossed the US/Canada border followed by a night in Buffalo at a ridiculously overpriced hotel. We flew from Buffalo to Newark on Sunday morning then from Newark to Richmond in Virginia then drove three-and-a-half hours from Richmond to White Sulphur Springs in West Virginia (aka Middle of Nowhere). We arrived at our hotel at about 6 pm Sunday to discover that our room for the week was at an enormous resort called The Greenbrier. Nothing like a bit of seven-star luxury for a week... >>> Briony Harper is travelling on the road with long-time boyfriend and professional golfer Jarrod Lyle for the first time this year as his business manager.
