Full Time Card??
Shepparton golfer Jarrod
Lyle’s bid to become a fulltimemember
of the US PGA
Tour took another step forward
at the weekend when
he made the cut at the Texas
Open.
Lyle, 28, has made the cut
in all five PGA Tour events
he has contested this year,
including a top 10 placing in
New Orleans last month.
A closing one-over par 73
yesterday earned him a
share of 41st spot, 12 strokes
behind Australian winner
Adam Scott.
The finish swelled Lyle’s
prizemoney earnings this
season by $23 180 to an
impressive $295 312.
His father, John, a former
one-handicapper and longtime
Goulburn Valley Country
Week squad member, is
thrilled with his son’s
beginning to the year.
‘‘He’s played really consistently
on the main tour
and this is definitely the
best start he’s had since he’s
been over there,’’ John said.
‘‘I was just looking at his
stats today and if he’d
played enough rounds he’d
be sitting in 37th spot on
scoring average on the US
Tour.
‘‘That shows he is playing
some pretty good golf when
he has the opportunity to
play.’’
Lyle boasted the equal
fourth-least putts per round
in Texas, but was only tied
61st in greens in regulation.
‘‘Putting is an area of his
game that he’s improved
quite a bit and his putting
stats are good, but it also
can reflect that he’s missing
the green,’’ John said.
‘‘Obviously, he’s chipping
well and getting up and
down, but you’re not creating
a lot of birdie opportunities if
you’re missing the greens.’’
Lyle’s strong form has
earned him the chance to
play more regularly on the
PGA Tour, but he will mix
his tournament play with
events on the secondary
Nationwide Tour.
He is first alternate for this
week’s Byron Nelson Championship
in Irving, Texas,
and finds out today whether
he has made the field.
Otherwise, Lyle will compete
in the Nationwide Tour
event in North Carolina.
‘‘He’ll play Nationwide
when he’s not playing on the
main tour because he’s still
placed reasonably well on
that as well,’’ John said.
‘‘He wants to keep his
options open asmuch as he
can because, even in five
starts, he’s sitting 131st on
the (PGA Tour) money list.
‘‘If he can have another
couple of good results in
tournaments he could secure
his pass for this year.’’
Lyle is also playing in an
18-hole US Open qualifier in
Austin, Texas, today for the
chance to progress to a
36-hole play-off in the coming
weeks. |
