Texas Open.

Our week began early on Monday morning with a flight from Orlando to San Antonio for the Texas Open. As this was another PGA event, we received a courtesy car, and spent the week ploughing through traffic and over gutters in an enormous Ford F250 truck. The course this week is new for all players, and is positioned on a hill outside of the city. Due to the exposed nature of the area, strong winds play a big factor in the game, as does the presence of rattle snakes around the course. Players were warned not to chase after balls that landed out of bounds. During the week, I saw two snakes at the course, neither of which were close enough to harm anyone, but still near enough to frighten me! Tournament organisers and players were keenly watching the weather this week as weather maps indicated the entire state of Texas would be hit by severe storms later in the week. Storms did arrive on Thursday night that initially postponed round two on Friday and eventually led to the cancellation of the entire day that was rescheduled for Saturday. The storms were so severe that they caused flash flooding, kept people at home for the day, and led to tornado warnings in the surrounding counties. We spent the day in our hotel room as roads around us were too flooded – even for the truck. As a result of the delay, round two was played on Saturday, and the remaining 2 rounds were scheduled for Sunday. After scores of 70 and 72 to make the cut, Jarrod teed off at 7.20 am Sunday morning for round three then had to turn around and immediately begin round 4 at 1.50 pm. He finished the tournament tied 41st, 12 shots behind the winner – fellow Aussie Adam Scott. We packed up the car as soon as Jarrod’s 36 holes were finished and drove two hours to Austin, Texas, where Jarrod is scheduled to play in a US Open qualifier. NOTE: Lyle posted the equal-best score of three-under-par 69 at the US Open qualifier at Austin Country Club to snare one of the five qualifying berths in a sectional qualifying tournament next month. Payne Gniewek, who works as a part-time instructor at the club, joined Lyle at the top of the leaderboard in the 80-strong field. The five qualifiers advance to sectional qualifying tournaments at Pebble Beach from June 17 to 20 where they will compete for a US Open spot. >>> Briony Harper is travelling on the road with long-time boyfriend and professional golfer Jarrod Lyle for the first time this year as his business manager. Her weekly behind-the-scenes columns will appear in The News each Thursday.
