US Open Q by Briony
Monday 31 May – Tuesday 8 June
Our week began once more with an early morning flight from Orlando to Baltimore, Maryland, for a Nationwide event.
Jarrod missed the cut on Friday afternoon, which was a surprise given his recent form.
He seemed to be giving himself a challenge to make birdies without actually hitting the fairway!
The only time he hit it straight was when his ball nearly hit me while I was sitting under a tree, although he still missed by 5 cm.
After missing the cut we changed our flights to get to Memphis, Tennessee on Saturday morning.
Due to the lack of news from Baltimore last week, I am going to include news from Monday and Tuesday of this week as it relates to the US Open qualifier.
If you thought my explanation of our travel plans was confusing last week, I challenge you to make sense of a condensed version of the qualifier!
Thirty-six holes on two different courses. One-hundred-and-twenty players vying for 12 spots plus two ‘alternates’ if anyone pulls out of the Open.
Jarrod shot three-under for both rounds to finish at six-under.
There were 10 players who finished with scores better than six-under who all immediately got through and five players tied at six-under who had to play-off for the last two spots, and the two alternate spots.
The first play-off hole ended with five pars. The second play-off hole was played repeatedly until there was a result.
The first time, all got par. The second time, one player had birdie and took one spot.
The third time the remaining four all got par. The fourth time, one got a birdie to claim the final spot.
Another player mistakenly picked his ball up after the birdie, so was out of the running for an alternate position.
The fifth time, both Jarrod and the other remaining player got par.
By this time, it was about 8 pm and there was almost no light, so play was suspended.
At 8am Tuesday morning the play-off continued, with Jarrod making a birdie on the second hole and claiming the first alternate position.
In summary, while he is not guaranteed a start in the Open, Jarrod will be called if someone pulls out.
So now, after all that excitement – and far too much golf for one day – we are focused on the PGA event in Memphis this week where we hope Jarrod’s great form will continue.
