US Open??

Wednesday June, 9 ¬– Sunday, June 13 Jarrod turned his attention to the St Jude Classic in Memphis, Tennessee, after the madness of the US Open qualifier. This tournament raises money for a children’s hospital called St Jude that treats children for free and relies entirely on fundraising and donations to cover the costs. The event has been running for more than 20 years and provides in excess of $25 m annually to the hospital, which makes it extremely worthwhile to attend. There were not too many of the big-name players in the field as they were already in California preparing for the Open. By far the biggest crowds were following John Daly, who somehow hit the wrong ball during his round to create controversy again. The weather was unbearably hot and humid, and we were dripping with sweat after just a few minutes outside. Apparently, in the next couple of months, temperatures will reach the high 30s with 100 per cent humidity. I was reminded I was in the south when I saw the signs that usually read ‘Quiet Please’ instead reading ‘Hush Y’All’. Jarrod began the tournament with bogey, bogey, triple bogey and, unfortunately, things did not get much better. He ended round one with a score of seven-over par, with the leader at seven-under. He was eight-over at the end of round two and missed the cut by many shots despite feeling as though he was playing some good golf. Jarrod is now officially the first alternate for the US Open after the conclusion of this week’s Memphis event. We have decided to make the trip to the west coast in the hope that someone pulls out of the Open and Jarrod gets a start instead of travelling to Fort Smith, Arkansas, for next week’s Nationwide event. It is just too good an opportunity to miss, and if Jarrod doesn’t get to play the Open we will at least watch the event for a day and then enjoy the sights of Pebble Beach. Due to our last-minute arrangements, we are staying at a hotel that costs $295 per night – which is apparently cheap for that particular week! We were creatures of habit this week, eating lunch or dinner at the same little café seven days in a row! Tropical Smoothie Café – highly recommended! >>> Briony Harper is travelling on the road with long-time boyfriend and professional golfer Jarrod Lyle for the first time this year as his business manager. Her weekly behind-the-scenes columns will appear in The News each Thursday.
