Reno

The Reno-Tahoe Open in Nevada this week resembled an invitational, with a field of just 126 players. Many of the big-name players were either at the British Open or enjoying a week off and organisers were unable to find enough players to fill the normal 132 places. Jarrod was asked to play in a special Pro-Am on Monday that the Peppermill Casino in Reno organised. As a result, we received free accommodation for the week at the Peppermill, which is an Italian-style establishment with shops, boutiques, restaurants, a huge outdoor pool area, an enormous day spa and, of course, a large casino. Each of the pros who took part in the Pro-Am received $100 worth of casino chips for each birdie they got during the round. In addition to theMonday Pro-Am, Jarrodmade the field for the official tournament Pro-Am on Wednesday, which was his first official PGA Pro-Am for the year — a good sign of his performance to date. TheMontreux Golf Course is situated 6000 m above sea level, so the air is surprisingly thin. It was quite a struggle to walk around the course, for both spectators and players. However, there are brilliant views of the valley below the course and up into the snow-capped mountains that surround Reno, so all the huffing and puffing was definitely worth it in the end. Jarrod shot 69 and 72 (par 72) in rounds one and two, andmade the cut by six shots. He then struggled with putting at the weekend, with scores of 75 and 73 to finish tied 39th. Itwas a very disappointing finish given that he had been hitting his driver and irons sowell, but he just couldn’tmanage to sink many birdie putts. After his round on Saturday, wemade a trip over the mountains to Lake Tahoe— amust-see for everyone who visits the area. It is a huge, aqua-blue lake surrounded by snowcappedmountains. There are several beach areas around the lake that are so big youwould swear you were beside the ocean. Sunday afternoon was time for me to take advantage of the Peppermill’s day spa and time for Jarrod to turn $150 into $275 on the tables. After a relatively successfulweek, we are off to Toronto, Canada for the next event. ● Briony Harper is travelling on the road with long-time boyfriend and professional golfer Jarrod Lyle for the first time this year as his business manager.
